Located just 12 minutes from the Comfort Inn Lucky Lane, Walnut Canyon in Arizona is a United States National Monument located in Flagstaff Arizona.
Walnut Canyon’s rim elevation is 6,690 feet, and features long loop trails and cliff dwelling rooms constructed and inhabited by the Sinagua people, a cultural group who occupied the region from 66 A.D – 1400 A.D. Civilization grew around the mountains despite the lack of available water, with small gardens or corn, squash, and beans sprouting up to provide food for the families living in the canyon’s rim. People inhabited the area for over 150 years before moving on to find land with more available water sources. As time wore on, Walnut Canyon was looted by individuals looking to steal ancient artifacts still lingering in the cave. This destruction lead to the establishment of the Walnut Canyon National Monument in 1915.
More than 100,000 people visit the Walnut Canyon National Monument each year making it one of the most visited attractions in the state of Arizona.
